Prve korake v pravlji\u010dnem svetu \u017eenske \u0161portne gimnastike deklice naredijo \u017ee pri \u0161estih letih. Sodobna \u017eenska \u0161portna gimnastika pa je na tekmovanjih zastopana z \u0161tirimi tekmovalnimi orodji, ki so predstavljena v nadaljevanju. Na orodjih tekmovalke prika\u017eejo razli\u010dne sestave, ki so tehni\u010dno zelo zahtevne in dolo\u010dene z idealnim modelom gibanja posamezne prvine. Prvinese izvajajo zaporedno in so urejene v kompozicijo. Tekmovalne sestave ocenjuje sodni\u0161ka komisija, ki izra\u010duna vrednost sestave in odbitke za napake v sestavi. Sodobna sestava na bradlji traja pribli\u017eno 20 sekund in v tem \u010dasu tekmovalka izvede od 14 do 20 prvin. Na gredi je treba vzdr\u017eevati ravnote\u017eje telesa pod zelo te\u017ekimi pogoji, zato morajo dekleta vsa gibanja izvesti kar se da natan\u010dno. V parterni sestavi se morajo prepletati akrobatske in ritmi\u010dne prvine. Atraktivnosti discipline prispevajo \u0161e ples in balet seveda v povezavi z glasbo.
